In my blog in August, Unleashing The Power of Big Dreams, I talk about how important it is to allow young people to dream big, even when it seems like their dreams are unrealistic. Well, today my understanding of that concept expanded. I was driving through the rain, and I was thinking about a friend of mine who has taken hit after hit in life, and he’s such an incredible human being. He has big dreams. Why hasn’t he landed in a good place? Then I saw the answer.
When I wrote about this originally I thought along the lines of the kid who wants to play in the NBA, and the motivation of the dream helping them to discover sports medicine, or business. My understanding only worked one way. The big dream leading to the more realistic one. Today I realized that it can, and often does work the other way. Sometimes when we think we’re dreaming really big, the universe says “hold my beer”. I have seen, and experienced, working towards a dream that doesn’t exactly work out just for something better to happen. When things aren’t turning out, our inclination is to think that the dream is too big, but maybe the universe is trying to tell us that it’s not big enough. Maybe the universe has something better in store.
Are you dreaming big enough? Do you feel excited about your future?
