Meditation isn’t always sitting criss-cross applesauce on the beach at sunset. Some of us need a more active way to clear our minds. Here are ten ways to explore meditation for those of us who struggle sitting completely still.

Zentangle is meditative drawing to help clear mind.
  1. Draw - Zentangle is one of my new favorite ways to unwind. It's called “yoga for the mind”, and is a great meditation method. You can use what you have at home, or you can try a beginner set.

  2. Watercolors - Watercolors are inexpensive and fun. Andrea Nelson has some simple tutorials that look beautiful. Get started with some supplies here.

  3. Origami - From frogs to flowers, the process of creating 3-D objects from paper leaves little room for intrusive thoughts. I started with this exact book of origami flowers. If you’re not into flowers, there are many options for beginners.

  4. Crochet or knitting - My Nonna taught me how to crochet when I was a little girl, and when she passed away in 2008, my sister and I made sure to continue. When I need to calm my mind for some meditation time, I can depend on repetitive patterns to soothe my brain. There are many easy tutorials online, but it is important that you start with yarn that is easy to work with. I like the Bernat Softee Chunky line. I bought this set of hooks last year, and it has everything you’d need, and it’s easier on your hands.

  5. Listening to music - Music is so magical. It can help you process an emotion, or change a mindset. I have always loved music, and many people find it easier to clear their heads when music is playing. Here is a list of some music that is designed for meditation.

  6. Reading - When was the last time you read a book just because? I am typically always reading something. I love to listen to memoirs, and read historical fiction. Sometimes, I just need a fluffy romance novel. It’s just for you. Find something you like. Here are some of my favorites.

  7. Creating lists - Sometimes you just have to get it all out of your head because it’s stressing you  out. Other times, you just want to get excited about something, a bucket list. This can be a precursor to active meditation too. Sometimes you need to clear your mind before you clear your mind. Here are some lists you can make to get you started

  8. Writing - Write about your day, write a story, or write affirmations. If you’re a words person, it can be so satisfying to describe a scene, or to put your feelings on a page. If you write affirmations, you can use them later to help create a positive mindset. Here’s some help with that.

  9. Yoga, Tai chi, or Qi Gong - These forms of exercise double as meditations. They are designed to move and strengthen while also relaxing the mind and body. Yoga is probably the one you know best, and can find the most easily. Try this beginner Tai Chi video from TaiFlow. It is so gentle on the body and mind.

  10. Learn a new recipe - Chocolate Chip Cookies or Pasta Arrabiata, delving into making something new requires focus. It can take you away from anything else that’s on your mind, and you’ll have something delicious at the end. Of the 10 Best Active Meditation Methods for Clearing the Mind, this is the one your friends and family will love the most. Here’s a good place to find inspiration.
